Underage AGM Report 2010
Successful Year for Nemo Underage:
The AGM of Nemo Rangers Underage Committee was held in the Club on Friday 8th January 2010. The well attended meeting looked back on 2009 season and started preparation for the year ahead with the Election of Officers and selectors for all the Underage teams.
The meeting was Chaired by Underage Chairman Patrick Kelleher and in attendance were a number of the Senior Club Officers including the President, Chairman, Asst Secretary and other members of the management committee.
In his address to the meeting the Chairman said that it was a good year for the Underage section of the Club with all teams competing well in their relevant grades. This was topped with a number of on the pitch successes and in particular he said was the fe11 victory in the John Keirns Trophy which was Nemo first success in that tournament. In terms of teams it was our biggest entry in Bord competitions with playing numbers increasing all the time and in particular there has been a big rise in our underage girls. He said that the entering of teams in the South East Division has been very beneficial in developing players and this year saw us entering four competitions up from one the previous year.
The street leagues he said were again a huge success and he thanked all who helped with their organisation and assisted in their smooth running especially Committee Chairperson Therese Sommers and Secretary Mike Donovan. Street Leagues finals day is the biggest day in the club calendar with numbers increasing year on year.
Patrick Kelleher concluded by thanking all the officers, coaches and selectors for all there hard work and commitment throughout the year. He also thanked the Bord Delegates, City, South East and Mid Cork and the Club Members who served as Officers on those Bords.
Club Chairman Liam Twomey and Club President in their address thanked the Underage Committee for all their work and congratulated them on their work in developing and promoting Hurling and football within the club.
The Runaí in his report spoke of the success of the annual Mick O’Brien Tournament which was held in the end of February last year. Kevin Barrett also mentioned the introduction of the Football Shield competition by Bord na Nóg this year for the fe14’s and the remarkable win that Nemo had in the final of this fledgling competition given that they were trailing well at half time. In his report he gave a full account of all the various underage activities for the year and finally, he thanked the Ladies committee for all their help during the year in catering for many different underage events held throughout the year.
Each team then gave an account of the year:
The fe16’s had a good run in the football Championship reaching the final of the City and semi final of the county losing out to the eventual county champions. In Hurling they had a good league campaign culminating with the League title, a game which marked the end of their time at underage. We wish them well as they advance to the ranks of minor for the forthcoming year. A special thanks also to all the coaches and selectors who have work with this squad over the years.
Nemo fe15s commenced their campaign in mid January 2009 and ended it in mid December with a football league trophy. In between we played close to 20 matches in both hurling and football. In hurling we did not qualify for the league play offs but had some very good performances in the earlier rounds. They played Bishopstown (eventual winners) in the championship in September and ran them to 5 points in a thrilling match. The football season went well as they completed a league and championship double. The footballers remained unbeaten in league and championship and though they lost one or two challenge matches the lessons learned from these stood to them at the end of the season.
Nemo Fe14 Boys had a very good year in 2009 and competed well in many competitions including, City leagues, Feile. Shield, City Championships, Southeast league and various tournaments. Highlights of the year were winning the Football Shield competition in early October when they beat a much faniced Bishopstown side in the final and a week later won the City B Hurling Championship when they overcame Brian Dillons in the final. They went for a hat-trick of titles in November when they reached the final of the Bord na Nog football league but lost out to a strong Mallow team on the day. Both Football and Hurling panels are looking forward to another equally successful year in 2010.
The fe 13’s had a extremely busy year playing in a number of various competitions. In the Football they operated a split team Dubh and Glas for the third year, which saw both teams compete in the A football League. The Dubh team competed well in their section just missing out on a place in the quarter finals while the glas team strucggled with injuries throughout the early rounds of the League, they competed on the resumption of the League after the summer. The Dubh team play in the A championship but lost out to a very strong St. Michaels side. Glas played B Championship and won through to the final where they came up just short on the day to Glanmire. In September the whole squad travelled to Tralee for the annual Austin Stacks Tournament where they lost their semi final to the eventual Plate winners.
In Hurling they had a good league campaign loosing only two of their eight games and qualified for the semi final here they played Valley Rovers who Nemo had lost to in the league but with a tremendous effort won on this occasion to meet Carrigaline in the final. However Nemo lost out on the night. They also played in the 14C South East hurling competition. Bord Na Nóg ran a new competition this year, a hurling blitz, for all teams in the County. Nemo won through round one but failed to qualify for the final from round two. The 13’s this year played 47games in all competitions and also had a number of players involved with the Féile hurling Squad.
The Fe12’s played in their respective league winning all but one game on their way to winning the title with victory over Glanmire in the final. They entered the South East 12B football league as well finishing as runners up. In Hurling they participated in the City League. They also entered the South East Fe12C League and with the support of the Fe 11’s they topped the League. In the County Championship they won through to the qualifiers to represent the City in the County but lost out in the County Quarter final.
The Fe11’s like the Fe 13’s played two split teams in the Football League, with both teams having contrasting forms in their relevant sections. The Glas team qualified for the League Semi final only loosing out by a point from a last minute goal. The highlight for their year though was the John Keirns Tournament. With both squads combined they qualified for the finals day in Páirc Uí Chaoimh. On the Day they had three wins resulting in Nemo winning the tournament for the first time ever. In Hurling they played in the City League and some of them contributed greatly to the hurling successes of the fe12’s.
The U10 season came to an end on Saturday 12th December after a great year. The main think this group of lads will miss is not being part of this year’s Street League’s as they move up to the Bord games at U11. The enjoyment they got from Street Leagues just shows in the numbers.
A lot of matches were played during the year in football between challenge and The East Cork League (Glanmire League). they entered the East Cork league with 2 equal teams and there was 6 other teams in their group - Glanmire , Carrigaline , Mallow, Fermoy , Midleton and Mitchelstown. We played a total of 11 matches wining 9 , drawing 1 , and loosing 1 with all players given equal playing time . The finals occurred on the Saturday of the weekend of the All Ireland football Final so with reduced numbers of players and mentors we pulled out. Mick Daly has joined the coahing team as hurling coach.
In football, the fe9’s have a squad of 30 boys training on Saturday mornings.
During April/May, they participated in a 7-a-side blitz run played over four Saturday mornings in the Glen Centre. All our recent challenge games have been small sided (8/9-a-side) games, ie all players involved all the time. These included matches against Douglas, Passage, St Finbarrs, Carrigaline and Glanmire. In hurling they are training and developing all the time.
Norma Cotter, Vice-Chairperson (Girls) said that their section is going from strength to strength with teams now from fe6 to fe16. The 12’s, 14’s and 16’s play in the Mid Cork Division. She paid tribute to all those working with the girls.
Pride of place goes to the girls fe16 team who completed their league unbeated with victory over Douglas in the final. In the County Championship they lost by a point to Banteer. Some of this squad were also members of Junior Ladies panel that went so close to winning a county title this year.
The fe14’s had a number of good wins this year but unfortunately came up just short of the mark to qualify for the knock out stages.
The girl’s fe12’s had enough numbers for two teams with one of them unlucky not to make the semi final of the league.
The fe 6’s, 8’s and 10’s all trained regularly and played in the Street league competition with the fe10’s also participated in the a number of blitzs.
Street leagues again this year attracted very big numbers with over 240 boys and 180 girls signed up and playing games weekly throughout April, May and June culminating in the finals day in Mid June. The annual street Leagues Skills competition and final which have traditionally finished on finals day were held separately this year on Lá Na Club on the 10th May and proved very successful so successful that it may now continue in that format. James Masters opened finals day after the parade of teams behind Carrigaline Pipe band. Many of the Senior Players both the Men and the Ladies were present throughout the day and afterwards presented all the awards, trophies, Shields, Plaques and medals.
Indoor hurling happened again over the winter’s months and is now currently half way through this year programme. This will conclude just prior to the commencement of the 2010 Street Leagues. numbers again this year are very encouraging so much so that an extra session had to be introduced to those attending.
The PRO Pádraig Treacy in his report thank all the teams for the various match reports and results which helps to keep the web pages up to date. He also said that all reports are also on Saturdays Echo in the Club notes.
The Election of Officers resulted in all the outgoing being returned for another year.
The Meeting concluded with The Chairman thanking every one for the support and their attendance.

Nemos Fe 14's played St. Finbarrs on Easter Monday in the Semi final of the City Féile Peil Competition. The game was played in CIT in what were very difficult conditions with a driving wind blowing straight down the pitch and driving rain but despite this both teams served up a tremendous display of football, one which both clubs can be very proud of. Both teams fought till the very end to carve out a win for their side. Nemo were hoping to overturn their recent League defeat to the same opposition. The team had prepared well and were looking forward to the challenge.
Nemo lost the toss and ended up playing against thw wind in the first half. Nemo altered the game plan to suit the conditions and to a man the Nemo players gave all in the first half laying the foundations for what was to prove a dramatic win. The Barr's opened the scoring with a point with Nemo Equalising soon afterwards. Nemo's defence stood solid and twarted many good Barr's attacks. The Barr's added two points to put the score at 0-1 to 0-3 in favour of the Togher Club. Eric Seymour then put Nemo a point up with a goal mid way through the first half.
Nemo looked to extend the lead but a combination of two great saves by the Barrs Keeper and the crossbar denied them. The Barrs then added two more points to go into a one point lead and then following a Nemo free in the Barrs end of the pitch the Barrs gathered possession and broke quickley to goal at the other end they then tagged on a point to put themselves five points up. Nemo got a point just at the stroke of half time which saw the half time score 1-2 to 1-6 in favour of the Barrs.
The second half was a very tight game for the first twenty minutes, the Barrs stopped several Nemo attacks while Nemos defence was solid cutting out any Barrs attack. Nemo luck looked as if had deserted them that it was going to be one of those days, when they saw several oppertunities missed or stooped. In the last ten minutes of normal time Nemo got three points courtesy of David O'Connor, Cian Devine and Andrew Forde. the gap was now down to one. With the clock going into Injury time Nemo were awarded a free and up stepped Andrew Forde to point to tie the game. From the resulting kick out nemo won possession through Eric Seymour and Nemo launched another attacked. Nemo were awarded another free and Forde pointed again to put Nemo one up three minutes into injury time. Nemo again gained possession from the kick out and launched yet another attack from which the ball broke free on the edge of the square and in raced Forde to punt the ball into the back of the net past the Barrs Keeper to seal a four point win, they now advance to the County Feile Peil Semi Final. Cian Devine was awarded the Maher Sports man of the match of which there were several contenders from both teams.
Final Score: Nemo 2-7 St. Finbarrs 1-6.
The draws for this years City Championships were made in Bishopstown GAA Club recentltly and they have set up a number of intriging fixtures.
The Fe 16A and Fe 16B footballers have drawn St Michaels in their respective Championship.
The Fe 15 hurlers have drawn Bishopstown.
The Fe 14's footballers have drawn St. Finbarr's who they have played in the Feile Peil competition and in the County Champ Qualifier Final, both of which were tight games which Nemo eventually won. While the Fe 14 hurlers have drawn White Church who they also met in the County Championship Qualifiers.
The Fe 13's have also drawn White Church but in the Football Championship.
